How Even A Beginner Can Develop Telepathy

By Paul Fowles

In layman's terms, telepathy is simply the transfer of thoughts, feelings, and/or emotions between one person and another, using only the power of their minds.

Contrary to what some may believe, practically everyone possesses a certain amount of telepathic ability, although most people have no idea as to how they should control it on a conscious level. Considering that each and every one of us experience some form of telepathic activity, even if only on a subconscious level, wouldn't it be great if we were able to control this ability in such a way that we could use it to communicate?

Have you ever been walking down the road feeling as though you are on top of the world, only to bump into someone you know, and to discover they are feeling depressed and miserable? Within just a short space of time your own mood will have changed to be more in line with that person's mood. Even so, there is still much skepticism regarding the use of mind power.

What I'm trying to say is; it's not necessarily the words which someone says to you, but instead it's the transference of their feelings and emotions to your subconscious mind, and this in itself is a form of telepathy.

In recent scientific studies, it's been determined that if someone accesses their subconscious mind and then learns to direct their thoughts and feelings towards another specific individual, dormant telepathic abilities can be brought back to life.

As children we are taught by our parents and by our teachers how to communicate. Not only are we taught how to speak, but we also learn a vast amount of body language. In fact, we learn to mimic to such an extent that we even talk with the same accent as those who taught us. Of course, this goes to show that we all have the same ability with regards to learning how to communicate, but unfortunately we only learn those things which we are taught.

How different would things be had our parents decided to teach us about that "other" certain ability? How would things be today if our parents taught us how to communicate with our minds? Surely, just because our parents never taught us, doesn't necessarily mean that we can never learn to do it.

Let's take a look at a few ways one can use in order to reawaken ones telepathic ability.

Developing Your Mental Muscle

Just as children need to strengthen their voice boxes, and just as they need to learn how to control their mouths, so too do we need to learn how to strengthen and control our telepathic abilities.

Interestingly enough, that part of your brain which controls telepathic communication, functions at its best on a subconscious level which is similar to a trancelike state. In essence, this trancelike state is simply a level deep relaxation which all humans can achieve with relative ease.

The easiest way to reach a hypnotic state, is by learning how to relax your mind. Once you can successfully reach this point whenever you want, you will have managed to have trained your mind to be controlled at will.

Learning to Focus

This is perhaps one of the most difficult challenges of all because it is certainly not easy to remain focused during a time when you're experiencing a trancelike state of mind. The next time you have a practice session, you need to practice focusing on someone you'd like to make contact with.

You need to picture this person in your mind together with happy thoughts. You then need to imagine this person actually receiving all those thoughts and feelings you're trying to transfer across. The length of time that you need to remain focused will depend on how long you feel it takes to make a connection.

The next step requires you to cut your focus off completely in order to end the contact. This step is vital as it will cause the other person to realize the connection has been lost, and in turn they will try and make contact with you.

The reason why one should practice focusing on your own is so that when you start practicing with a partner, you will have already conditioned your mind to be receptive and as such, it will be easier to receive images, feelings, thoughts, and impressions.

Practicing With a Partner

Ideally, you need to choose one person to be the sender and one person to the receiver. Of course, the sender should only try to project simple things, particularly in the beginning. You will find it is best to start off with simple items which are brightly colored and easily recognizable.

The person who is the receiver should ensure they have a notebook and a pen nearby so that they can keep a record of all thoughts and impressions which they receive.

When the two of you have reached the end of your practice session, then of course you should both compare your notes in order to see just how accurate the two of you have been. As time goes by, and you practiced more, you will find that you both become noticeably better as far as telepathic communication is concerned. - 42534

UFC 98 Review: Karate Is Back As Machida Beats Evans

By Ross Everett

When golf legend Jack Nicklaus was still a young upstart in the sport and only starting to tear up PGA courses, legend Bobby Jones commented following 'The Golden Bear's''65 Masters win that "he plays a game with which I am not familiar". Following his absolute destruction of Rashad Evans in the main event of UFC 98, there's likely a few MMA fighters saying the same thing about the new light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida who made it look easy en route to a 2nd round TKO victory.

The fight started slowly, with each man trying to get a feel for his opponent and wait him out to see who blinked first. Evans, who prefers to counter punch, quickly began to become uncomfortable with facing an adversary who didn't come right at him. Late in the first round, Machida went on offense with frightening suddenness, flooring Evans with a nice straight right hand. Evans gamely tried to fight back, but a final right hand from the Shotokan Karate master left him out cold.

After the fight UFC announcer Joe Rogan proclaimed the start of the Machida era and this is not just mere hyperbole. Machida is unlike any fighter before him, rooted in mastery of traditional martial arts but with the versatility of a modern MMA competitor. He's essentially a Mortal Kombat character come to life--in a more realistic cross disciplinary comparison he shares many of the same characteristics as boxing great Floyd Mayweather, Jr. as he combines insane handspeed, underrated stopping power and nearly impenetrable defense into an unorthodox and extremely lethal package. Like Mayweather, hes a tough opponent to prepare for as there's simply no way to replicate his skill set in sparring.

Outside of the cage, Machida is a modest and respectful gentleman who is quick to give credit to his father and his karate teachers for his MMA success. He spent most of his UFC 98 postfight interview not singing his own praises, but imploring others to strive to realize their dreams. In the past, his limited English was seen as a potential marketing liability here in the US but on this occasion he demonstrated vastly improved fluency in the language as a Portuguese translator stood by.

An odd trivia note about Machida serves as further repudiation for MMA neophytes who think that the sports kinship with pro wrestling began with Brock Lesnar: Machida was discovered by Japanese wrestling legend Antonio Inoki, and became something of his protege. He trained for some time at the New Japan Pro Wrestling dojo in Tokyo and made his MMA debut on a NJPW card in 2003, defeating Pancrase veteran Kengo Watanabe.

Perhaps the most frightening thing about Machida is that hes only now reaching his full potential as an MMA fighter. In other words, hes only going to get better which is a scary prospect for opponents given the fact that hes never lost in MMA competition. In his recent bouts hes shown a downright lethal ability to end fights. He stopped Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou at UFC 79 with an arm triangle choke, and blitzed Evans and previous foe Thiago Alves with punishing punching combinations en route to TKO victories.

Machida will very likely face Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson in a future light heavyweight title defense and, with all due respect to the PRIDE/UFC veteran, its difficult to see him faring much differently than Evans did. One thing working in 'Rampage's' favor is his greater experience and a resume filled with high level opponents of various fighting styles. Still, everyone comes back to the fundamental reality that no one has ever really seen a fighter quite like Machida before.

In the co-main event of the evening, Matt Hughes defeated Matt Serra by unanimous decision to gain the upperhand in their long running feud. It was a surprisingly entertaining fight, with Serra taking the first round with his power punching before Hughes used his takedown and ground control abilities to win rounds two and three. The two men embraced after the fight so, for now at least, their well known dislike for one another that began during their stint as rival coaches on The Ultimate Fighter may have ebbed. - 42534

Buy Vibram Five Fingers Shoes And Wear Them For All Kinds Of Activities

By Jean Morgan

If you fancy the idea of doing your favorite sporting or leisure activity in shoes that make you feel as though you are barefoot, buy vibram five fingers. This innovative footwear was originally designed for use by climbers and sailors. They are called 'the barefoot alternative' due to their shape which is identical to the human foot. They have thin, flexible soles and special places to fit all your toes.

The logic behind the minimalistic, unique design was to duplicate the foot's natural biomechanics. When the toes are inserted into their spaces, body movement is improved. If you run or walk barefoot, the toes play a vital role in keeping the lower body stable. They also provide thrust, balance, and distribute weight evenly.

The shoes allow your toes to do what they are supposed to, namely give your feet control and limitless flexibility. The soles of these unique shoes are made of a high-performance, strong rubber compound. They will stand up to rugged roads, pavements, and dirt while being supple enough to allow the feet to move naturally.

When running in traditional running shoes, the foot strike is completely different to running barefoot. Running shoes tend to draw your heel to strike the ground first, whereas barefoot running draws the forefoot to strike first. By landing on the forefoot or middle foot, there is almost zero impact collision.

Tests were carried out on a group of barefoot runners by two sports scientists from the Italian National Olympic Committee. The athletes wore these Vibram shoes and were closely observed. After collecting much data, they concluded that the feet definitely worked in accordance with the biomechanics of a shoeless foot. Other studies indicate that barefoot running causes less injuries, particularly RSI (repetitive stress injury).

Buy vibram five fingers and you can wear them for all kinds of activities such as exercising, sports, yoga and aerobics. They are also great for water sports like skiing, wind-surfing, and skimboarding. The manufacturers guarantee optimal comfort and functionality. - 42534

Weight Loss Surgery & Other Solutions For Obesity

By Janey Hamilton

Weight loss surgery, comes with a stigma attached to it that very few other types of surgery have. Perhaps it is because people see obesity as being the fault of the person suffering from it - perceived over eaters, inherently lazy and taking the easy way out. This one-sided point of view is far too common and means that people who have tried every diet going and for whom exercise just hasn't worked are stigmatised by our society.

For those people who have tried and failed to lose weight, the surgery is a real solution that will be beneficial on many levels. From a quality of life point of view, post-surgery, people for whom climbing stairs wasn't just difficult but actually impossible can suddenly move around easily and resume activites such as playing with their children or grand children. They are able to enjoy outdoor holidays and exercise fully with their large size no longer restricting them. Weight loss surgery is not all about getting thinner; there are psychological issues and many associated health issues that can finally be overcome post-surgery.

Little things like only taking up one seat on the bus and not having people stare when out in town mean that post-surgery life is so much better. Many associated health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea are also reduced after weight loss surgery. Having lived a life controlled by food, weight loss surgery leads directly to improved self-confidence and esteem.

Another attack levelled at people going through this procedure is that the dangers are too high, and that putting your body through the stress of unneeded surgery is unhealthy. Experts in the industry, have actually put forward what seems to be a much more compelling case; the job of a surgeon is to preserve the health and to improve the quality of life of their patients, always striving to reduce the health risks. The key is the balance between the risk of performing the surgery versus the other health risks associated with obesity. And the bottom line is that surgery is often much less of a risk than not losing weight.

It is high time that the stigma attached to weight loss surgery was put to bed. For some people it is a last resort, which when turned to changes their life for the better, for good. The results can be transformational, physically and psychologically - and surely everyone deserves an opportunity to make a better life for themselves? - 42534

Tough Lessons About The Funding Of The Public Schools

By Louella Torres

The current education method in America is working aptly, says Bob Bowdon, but only for some -- and those few surely aren't the students. In his education docudrama "The Cartel," Bowdon, a TV news reporter in New Jersey, paints a terrific ugly scene of the institutional degeneracy that has resulted in pretty much incredible wastes of taxpayer money. It's not operose for Bowdon to illustrate that something's terribly awry with a state that pays $17,000 per pupil but can only manage a 39% reading proficiency rate -- that there's a crisis is undeniable, how to deal with it is another question altogether.

On the one side is the monumental Jersey teachers union and shadowy school officials, who guarantee that, as Bowdon points out in his movie, 90 cents of every tax dollar go for other expenses, including six figure incomes for school administrators and, in a upsetting example, a school board secretary who makes $180,000. The other cabal is the supporters of charter schools, the private schools that can shake off the authority of the public school system and would aid inner-city kids if their taxpayer money could be more cautiously used. In those broken public schools, Bowdon points out, it's almost unacceptable to fire a teacher -- so even a meager one has a trade for life.

"'The Cartel' examines lots of diverse aspects of public teaching, tenure, financing, support drops, corruption --meaning theft -- vouchers and charter schools," says Bowdon. "And as such it kind of serves as a swift-moving primer on all of the red-hot topics within the education-reform movement."

"The Cartel" first appeared on the festival circuit in summer 2009, appearing in theaters countrywide a year later. The picture has started a lot of talk, which should no doubt continue with the more-recent release of "An Inconvenient Truth" director Davis Guggenheim's own education expose, "Waiting for Superman." Bowdon says the documentaries can be seen as companion pieces: his focusing on public policy and Guggenheim's taking the human-interest angle. "My picture is the left-brained variation, more analytical," Bowdon says, "'Waiting for Superman' is more the right-brained treatment."

The left-brained method means arguments that follow the economics -- money misspent, opportunities wasted. But that isn't to say the picture is without heart. Bowdon makes sure his eye is invariably on the people affected, specially the inner-city students trapped in a damaged system. The tearful face of a youthful girl who learns she was not selected for a spot at a charter school makes its own potent argument for the unsatisfactory failure of a state's education system.

It's difficult to watch a film about corruption in Jersey and not think of the mob, but it's also unambiguous that this is a national crisis seen through a tight lens. A viewer anyplace in the country will discern similar failings in their own school system, and may share Bowdon's frustration and eagerness for a resolution. The one he seems to be most behind is the charter schools, which take the reins from the unions and give them back to the taxpayer. Nevertheless he also knows it'll be an upward struggle to regain control from those who've worked so intense to make education very profitable for the very few. - 42534

The Truth About The Corrupt Public Schools

By Edith Simpson

There's money to be made in education, argues Bob Bowdon, although merely if you cut away the unprofitable bits, like good quality teachers. In his documentary "The Cartel," Bowdon, a New Jersey TV news newsman, turns the camera upon the monumental degeneracy and misdirection that has led his state to squander more than any other on its students just with shoddy results. The numbers tell the tale: $17,000 spent per student, and at hand's but a 39% reading proficiency rate, it's distressing to contend that there's a crisis underway, but harder to agree on a solution.

On the one side is the massive Jersey teachers union and umbrageous school officials, who see to it that that, as Bowdon points out in his picture, 90 cents of every tax dollar go for other expenses, including six figure incomes for school administrators and, in a astonishing example, a school board secretary who makes $180,000. The other faction are the supporters of charter schools, the private schools that can evade the authority of the public school system and would aid inner-city kids if their taxpayer money could be more carefully used. One of Bowdon's principal criticisms is that a teacher, even a shoddy one, basically can't be fired -- which provides zero effort to do much genuine instruction.

"The documentary examines lots of out of the ordinary aspects of public education, tenure, backing, support drops, corruption --meaning theft -- vouchers and charter schools," says Bowdon. "And as such it kind of serves as a rapid-moving primer on all of the raging topics between the education-reform crusade."

"The film started making the round of the festivals in summer 2009, and made its theatrical debut just about a year later, in spring 2010. The movie has started a lot of talk, which ought no doubt carry on with the more-recent release of "An Inconvenient Truth" director Davis Guggenheim's own education expose, "Waiting for Superman." Bowdon says the documentaries can be seen as companion pieces: his focusing on public policy and Guggenheim's taking the human-interest slant. "The two films attain common conclusions," Bowdon says.

The left-brained stance means arguments that observe the economics -- money misspent, opportunities wasted. But that isn't to say the film is without heart. Bowdon makes certain his eye is at all times on the people affected, principally the inner-city students trapped in a damaged system. A girl's weeping upon hearing that she wasn't selected to attend a charter school, that she's stuck in her public school, represent the failure of a system as well as Bowdon's charts and interviews.

It's difficult to see a film about corruption in Jersey and not think of the mob, but it's also unmistakable that this is a national problem seen through a tight lens. A watcher anyplace in the country will discern similar failings in their own school system, and may share Bowdon's frustration and eagerness for a resolution. Bowdon puts his faith in the charter schools, where the taxpayer has influence over the kind and quality of instruction. Nevertheless he also knows it'll be an upward struggle to recover control from those who've worked so hard to make education very profitable for the very few. - 42534

St. Louis Dumps Kansas City In NFL Preseason Battle Of Missouri

By Ross Everett

The Kansas City Chiefs have had an awful preseason, primarily due to their inability to put points on the board. This liability cost offensive coordinator Chan Gailey his job earlier in the week, but in the first game with head coach Todd Haley calling the plays it was more of the same as the Chiefs couldn't find the end zone. St. Louis scored an offensive touchdown late in the first half and used a third quarter interception return for a score to beat Kansas City 17-9. The Chiefs finished the NFL preseason with a winless 0-4 record, while St. Louis posted a 3-1 mark.

NFL preseason betting aficionados who took a flier on the Rams were rewarded by their outright victory in the pickem game. Kansas City also finished 0-4 against the spread, while St. Louis finished 3-1 to the number. The combined 26 points put on the board went well UNDER the posted total of 36. The Chiefs went UNDER in all four preseason games, while the Rams split their O/U tally at 2-2.

Despite his teams continued offensive struggles, Haley tried to put a positive spin on his playcalling debut:

"I made a few mistakes out there but overall it felt good. Obviously, there were a couple of plays I would like to have back. After I got the feel a little bit, I didn't feel too out of sync with the game and what was going on. I thought our defense gave us a chance to win. Running the football is something we can feel good about."

The Chiefs moved the ball well, generating 406 yards of total offense but had trouble converting in the red zone. They also turned the ball over three times, the most costly a third quarter interception thrown by reserve QB Tyler Thigpen and returned for a touchdown. Afterwards, the Rams Quincy Butler suggested that his team has a new mindset:

"Every time the ball's in the air, we all think 'It's my ball. We all go and get it."

Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo was generally pleased with his teams effort in the victory:

"It was good to get those guys back in the swing. Now we've just got to get Marc (Bulger) cranked up."

Bulger has missed most of the preseason with a broken pinkie but is expected to start in the Rams regular season opener. Spagnuolo wasnt too concerned about all of the yardage his team gave up:

"The silver lining is the defense held them and got them to kick a field goal. So there's some good and bad always."

St. Louis will head to the Pacific Northwest next Sunday as they open their regular season against the Seattle Seahawks. The Chiefs will also open the NFL 2009 campaign on the road, heading to Baltimore to take on the Ravens. The Rams will remain on the road for week #2, playing at Washington while the Chiefs will host the Oakland Raiders at Arrowhead Stadium. - 42534

By Clara Welch

We all know how involved it is to keep a family out of harm's way. What with sharp things and trip hazards and electrical sockets, it gets even more testing to tend to a house when you can't see the dangers. That's part of what makes carbon monoxide such a life-threatening conundrum in the abode - you possibly could not be aware of it's there until it's too overdue.

Carbon monoxide is tasteless and odorless and not visible, you've heard this said a jillion times I'm confident, but it doesn't harm to reinforce this actuality. Carbon monoxide is formed as an effect of the burning of carbon-rich fossil fuels like petrol, coal, and natural gas. When two carbon atoms attach with a lone oxygen, carbon dioxide is formed - that's the greenhouse gasoline that has been causing so many alleged climate problems. But an exclusive carbon can join a single oxygen too, creating carbon monoxide, which poses a more abrupt menace than CO2.

The Danger of CO fumes in your home

In the dwelling, furnaces and gasoline stoves and water heaters can all be potentiality sources of leaks. Superstar Shortage At NBA All Star Game

By Ross Everett

The NBA All Star game was played without a couple of high profile participants this year as the Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant and Philadelphia 76ers' Allen Iverson would not play due to injury. Kobe and 'AI' were the latest in a string of injuries to All Star players that also claimed Portland's Brandon Roy and New Orleans' Chris Paul.

Kobe Bryant has been plagued with minor injuries all year, but missed the Lakers' last three games prior to the All Star contest due to an ankle sprain. Los Angeles is hopeful that by not playing in the game that Kobe will be able to return to action immediately after play resumes following the All Star break. Bryant did travel to Dallas to participate in All Star game festivities. Kobe is always up for a party, and reportedly had a fabulous time in Dallas over the weekend.

Iverson has missed Philadelphia's past five games due to an illness suffered by one of his young children. Unlike Kobe, Iverson wasn't expected to be in Dallas this weekend due to the nature of his situation. It's debatable that Iverson deserved an All Star game nod in the first place. He quickly wore out his welcome in Memphis to start the year, and eventually landed back in Philadelphia where he's averaged 14.4 points per game since his return. He was voted in to the starting lineup by NBA fans, and this renewed calls from the media to revise the procedure for selecting All Star game participants.

Jason Kidd of the Dallas Mavericks was chosen to replace Bryant in the Western Conference lineup, while New York's David Lee was the East's fill in for Iverson. The West already had two 'fill ins' named to their roster as Denver's Chauncy Billups and the LA Clippers' Chris Kaman took the place of Chris Paul and Brandon Roy respectively.

NBA betting enthusiasts had several options on the menu beginning with the annual 'rookies vs. sophomores' game on Saturday. The Sophomores were a -12 point favorite with the total set at 245' but were crushed by the rookie team. As usual, defense was in short supply at both the 'rookie v. sophomores' game and the actual All Star event. - 42534

Real Rapid Weight Loss

By Rian Haswanda

Can you really achieve rapid weight loss? The reply is yes, but towards be the greatest long term answer. You might have maybe seen examples of this on the Biggest Loser TV show. What most people don't understand is what the contestants put their bodies through to have such dramatic results in a short time of time. The outcomes seen on the program are not an illusion, but not realistic for most of us in real life who have multiple daily responsibilities. However, if you are seeking safe, realistic results, they may be obtained by incorporating the following suggestions.

Focus on Your Diet

To ensure you to achieve rapid weight loss, your diet must be impeccable! Not only must you avoid the obvious bad foods such as: fried foods, cakes, cookies, ice cream, all desserts, chips, and most processed foods that come in a box or bag. You must also avoid most beverages and fruits. You ought not drink any alcohol, coffee, soda, or fruit juices if you'd like rapid weight loss. Your beverages should consist of plenty of water throughout out the day (6-8 glasses), and optional green/herbal teas, or low sodium vegetable juices and broths.

Your meals should include one source of protein; preferably lean cuts of chicken or fish in 3 ounce portion sizes, or if you're a vegetarian substitute tofu or natto for meat. Eggs are another great source of protein you could include in your meals. You should limit your carbohydrate intake to just vegetables and these should be contributed to each meal. Avoid starchy vegetables like peas, carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, or corn and rapid weight loss will be easier.

Instead, focus on green vegetables. Also, consider adding a small portion of raw veggies to each meal, but avoid commercial salad dressings. For dressings use 1 tablespoon of olive oil and fresh lemon juice. Your meals shouldn't be spaced more than 4-5 hours apart and be sure to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you skip meals or wait longer than 5 hours to eat, your metabolism will slow which will make rapid weight loss hard.

You Must Exercise Daily

The other important consideration for rapid weight loss is exercise. When you have watched the Biggest Loser you might have perhaps seen the contestants engage in numerous physical challenges and exercise sessions. What you don't know, is the contestants spend hours every day working out. You probably don't have more than an hour of free time to exercise everyday so you'll want to concentrate on high intense workouts if you need rapid weight loss. Your workouts should include a mix of cardiovascular conditioning exercises along with resistance training exercises.

All very reputable weight lifting exercises to perform are those that use your body weight as resistance such as: push ups pull ups, squats, lunges, dips, planks, crunches and bridges. The reason these exercises some others other movements is they require more balance and coordination, resulting in more calories burned. Also, these exercises usually tend to significantly raise your heart rate. In between performing body weight exercises, add a short bout of cardiovascular exercise such as: jogging in place, jump rope, stepping along on a stair/bench, running on a treadmill, riding a stationary bike or using an elliptical trainer. The key to your exercise sessions is intensity. Try to keep your heart rate up and avoid long breaks in between exercises looking for rapid weight loss.

Rapid weight loss is not hard nor is it suggestible. However, in case you are diligent about your diet and you include high intensity workouts daily you can achieve your goal. Remember, it is usually advisable to check with a physician before beginning any weight loss program, especially if you're focused on rapid weight loss. - 42534

Colts' QB Manning To Get Record Contract Extension

By Ross Everett

In what has to be one of the least difficult front office personnel decisions in sports history, Indianapolis Colts' owner Jim Irsay has confirmed that the team will sign quarterback Peyton Manning to a contract extension that could make him the highest paid player in NFL history. Manning's current deal will expire after the end of the 2010 season, with the final two years having been voided due to his meeting a number of performance based criteria.

You can tell that an owner is adamant about resigning a player when he tells the media that he wants to make him the highest paid player in league history, and Irsay did just that:

"You know it's going to get done. I think it's clear, and we'll start on it this summer. That's been the way we do things [to hammer out an extension when a player is entering the final year of his contract]. And it'll be the biggest [contract] in history; there's not much doubt about that."

Not exactly the most advantageous negotiating position to make public that you're committed to breaking the bank to resign a player. Then again, it's not like Manning is a quarterback that can easily be replaced as Irsay emphasized:

"It simply comes to one question, and that's replaceability. Everything is based on the replaceability factor. You make decisions based on who you can afford to target and keep. ... Other guys you really want to [re-sign] you might have trouble doing it, because of what it costs you, and how much attention they're getting [from other teams in free agency]. We don't have that luxury and we've had to work hard."

Manning's agent, Tom Condon, has already had preliminary discussions with the Colts' management about a new deal. Condon also represent's Peyton's brother Eli Manning, and negotiated a $97.5 million contract extension from the New York Giants for him last year. Peyton's contract will almost certainly exceed those figures, with some speculating that he could receive $20 million per year with a $50 million signing bonus up front. - 42534

Baltimore Beats Atlanta To Complete Undefeated NFL Preseason

By Ross Everett

Even when the games don't count and the starters play little, if at all, the Baltimore Ravens hate to lose. Despite the Atlanta Falcons starting QB Matt Ryan playing only one series and with the Ravens third string signal caller John Beck playing the entire game it was apparent that Baltimore wanted the victory more. The former BYU standout threw for 232 yards and a pair of touchdown passes as the Ravens easily beat the Atlanta Falcons 20-3 at the Georgia Dome.

Sports enthusiasts who bet on NFL preseason action were rewarded for their investment in the Ravens, as Baltimore won outright as +3 road underdogs. The 23 combined points went UNDER the posted total of 35.

Ravens QB Beck hasnt had much playing time in the NFL since his ill fated rookie year in Miami in 2007. After the game, he expressed how pleased he was to get the opportunity to showcase his skills for the entire game:

"He (coach John Harbaugh) told me a few days ago that I would play the whole game. It was very exciting to get to play the whole game."

Beck made the most of his opportunity, finishing with 232 yards on 16 of 28 passing and a pair of touchdowns with no interceptions. The Ravens defense held the Falcons to just 175 yards of total offense.

Despite the lackluster effort, Falcons coach Mike Smith was nonplussed:

"You've got to understand in these games, you're going to call things defensively and offensively to put players in certain situations to evaluate them. You're not game-planning in a game like this. You're going to put players in certain situations to see how they handle certain techniques and coverages."

Falcon cornerback Chris Houston was a little more concerned after Beck abused the Atlanta defensive secondary all night:

"We've got to work on everybody getting to the ball. We've got to try to be more aggressive in our techniques. We made some plays tonight, but other than that, we still have a lot to work on as a defense."

The Ravens will get the 2009 NFL regular season underway at home, hosting the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, September 13th. The Falcons, meanwhile, will welcome the Miami Dolphins to the Georgia Dome to get their campaign started. Baltimore will head west to San Diego for a game against the Chargers in week 2, while Atlanta will remain at home for a key NFC South matchup against the Carolina Panthers. - 42534

Colts Slip Past Jags In NFL Opener

By Ross Everett

The often maligned Indianapolis Colts defense matched the ferocity of their Jacksonville Jaguars counterparts play for play, and one touchdown pass from Peyton Manning proved to be enough to earn victory by a 14-12 margin in the NFL season opener for both teams. The victory was Manning's 118th in a Colts uniform, tying the legendary Johnny Unitas for the franchise lead. Unitas, of course, was the personification of the franchise during their years in Baltimore.

NFL sports betting enthusiasts who took the Jaguars as +6 road underdogs were rewarded with the pointspread cover. Indianapolis dropped to 11-16 ATS over the past three years when favored. The 26 combined points went well UNDER the posted total of 45. Despite their reputation as an offensive juggernaut, the Colts have actually trended to the UNDER over the past three seasons, with 19 UNDERs in their past 35 lined games.

After the contest, Manning displayed his characteristic humility when asked about tying the mark held by the iconic Unitas:

"I've never felt comfortable with comparisons with him. I think he's kind of in his own category. But I am proud of those wins."

Manning was more concerned about the welfare of receiver Anthony Gonzalez who lefthe game with an injury:

"I askedRashean Matthis what happened and he said, 'I didn't even touch him . He has worked so hard in the offseason, I just hope it's not a season-ending injury."

Colts coach Jim Caldwell won his first game at the helm of an NFL team, and was pleased with the effort of the defense:

"Obviously, the defense played well and came up big at the end. We thought it would be a grind, and it was. I think our team certainly played tough, played hard, played with a lot of energy."

Jacksonville wasnt overly discouraged after the contest either, pleased with the intensity and their effectiveness in shutting down one of the NFLs best offenses. Maurice Jones-Drew praised the tenacious Indy defense after the game:

"They just did a great job in the red zone stifling our offense. My hat's off to them. But we have to learn how to finish."

Quarterback David Garrard also gave credit to the tenacity of the Indy pass rush:

"I thought, 'Here we go again, we have a great chance. You love to be in that situation. We were trying to get the ball to Maurice, but you've got to slow those pass rushers down. We did what we could do."

The Jaguars will open their 2009 NFL home slate on Sunday as they host the Arizona Cardinals. Theyll travel to Houston for a game against the Texans the following week. The Colts will head to south Florida for a game against the Miami Dolphins on Monday night. - 42534

UFC 88 Flashback: Evans Dominates 'The Iceman'

By Ross Everett

Rashad Evans didn't scream about demanding respect in his prefight interviews because hes smart enough to know that respect must be earned. He earned it and then some with a devastating 2nd round TKO of Chuck Liddell in the main event of UFC 88.

If Evans needed any more validation of how little respect he was getting, he could have taken a look at the UFCs text message prediction poll of the main event which favored The Iceman by a whopping 81% to 19% margin. Or he could have listened to the UFC announcers, who had all but penciled Liddell in for a return to light heavyweight title contention after his inevitable victory.

From the opening horn, Evans showed no fear of Liddells once legendary power. Instead, he danced and moved (which was dumbly criticized as showboating by the UFC announce team), using his slick footwork and speed to dart in and out of range of Liddells punches.

Evans highlight reel power shot was to come in the 2nd round. Liddell backed Evans up near the cage wall and went to throw an uppercut. Simultaneously, Evans responded with an overhand right that landed quicker, harder and more accurately. The perfectly placed punch knocked Liddell out cold and referee Herb Dean jumped in to cover him up and wave off the fight without taking a second look. Evans' KO was one of the most devastating in the history of the sport, and made all the more so by the status of the man on the receiving end.

Rashad Evans raised his record to 17-0-1 with the TKO victory. Liddell, meanwhile, saw his record drop to 21-6.

Liddells loss notwithstanding, it was a good night for UFC veterans as Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson won their fights in impressive fashion. Franklin looked particularly sharp in dismantling tough Matt Hamill, eventually prevailing by 3rd round TKO.

This was the UFCs first trip to Atlanta and despite a good attendance the crowd itself was somewhat disappointing. In a marked contrast to the knowledgeable and enthusiastic fans at the Target Center in Minneapolis for UFC 87"arguably the best MMA crowd ever at a US venue"the live crowd at Phillips Arena often acted as if they were at a taping of Georgia Championship Wrestling.

More problematic was the crowds utter lack of respect for the fighters postfight. Poor Dong Hyun Kim was booed during his postfight interview like he was Professor Toru Takana cutting a heel promo on Mr. Wrestling 2 after winning the Georgia Heavyweight Title by throwing salt in his opponents eyes while the referee was distracted. Not quite the respect that a 4th degree judo black belt whod just won a very tough fight deserves. Even Rashad Evans was booed after his dominating KO victory. - 42534

San Diego Makes Short Work Of Kansas City In NFL Action

By Ross Everett

The San Diego Chargers bounced back nicely from their Monday Night Football loss to Denver last week, opening a 20-0 halftime lead before coasting to a 37-7 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Chargers' quarterback Phillip Rivers passed for 268 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. Running back Ladanian Tomlinson ran for a season high 71 yards as San Diego evened their record at 3-3.

The Chargers easily covered the NFL pointspread as -6 road favorites. It was only the second pointspread cover of the year for San Diego, who moved their ATS record to 2-4. Kansas City dropped to 2-5 against the spread. The 44 points pushed against the posted total.

After the game, QB Rivers suggested that the loss to Denver was a turning point for his team:

"Last week, we felt like we made progress. We had the attitude we were looking for, focus, but we didn't win. But we knew we got better."

Tomlinson broke off one of his most impressive runs of the year on the Chargers first touchdown drive, a 31 yard pickup that he said lifted the team's spirits and led to the easy victory:

"It kind of got us going. It was something we needed and it was a big play for us. It was a staple of our offense. It's been around for years, old power. It was perfectly blocked and was just a great job of execution."

The Chiefs continued to struggle on their home field, which at one point was considered one of the toughest venues in the league for visiting teams. Kansas City has now lost ten straight at Arrowhead Stadium, and 29 of their last 32 games. Chiefs' nose tackle Ron Edwards lamented this home field struggle:

"We want to win for the home fans, for us, for everyone out there watching," nose tackle Ron Edwards said. "It's real painful."

Rivers pointed to the Chiefs' legacy of home field dominance in celebrating the win:

"Any time you come to Kansas City and win, it's good. We talked about getting on a roll and you've got to win one first before you can. Hopefully, this is something we can build on."

The Chargers return home to take on their hated rivals, the Oakland Raiders. Next Sunday's game has San Diego listed as a -16' home favorite with the total set at 42'. They'll travel to play the New York Giants the following week before returning home to face the Philadelphia Eagles on November 15. Kansas City will enjoy a bye week before returning to action on November 8 on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars. - 42534

Visiting Tigers Shock Hurricanes In Overtime

By Ross Everett

The Clemson Tigers used a touchdown pass on their first possession of overtime to upset the Miami Hurricanes 40-37 on Saturday night to cap a back and forth game. Miami kicked a field goal on their first possession of overtime to take the lead, but Clemson responded with a seldom used play on third and 11 to get the victory as quarterback Kyle Parker completed a 27 yard touchdown pass to Jacoby Ford. Clemson improved to 4-3 with the win while Miami slipped to 5-2.

College football betting devotees who backed Clemson as +4 road underdogs eventually cashed their tickets, but they definitely earned their money in a game that saw twelve lead changes and two ties. Clemson improved to 5-2 against the spread with the cover, while Miami dropped to 4-3 against the money. The 77 combined points sailed OVER the posted total of 43.

After the game, Jacoby Ford explained the logic for the surprise play:

"We knew this game was going to come down to who made more plays. And we did."

Miami has a history of winning when their offense is clicking-this loss was only the second in 115 games when the Hurricanes score 37 or more points dating back to'85.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was just glad this one is over:

"I have a birthday next month and I think I'm going to turn 50 instead of 40. We had to put on Superman capes. We made plenty of mistakes that could have lost us the game, but they played with poise and confidence. We just kept battling."

CJ Spiller was also a big factor for the Tigers as he set a school record with 310 all purpose yards including a 90 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. He also added 81 yards rushing and 104 yards receiving with a 56 yard touchdown catch.

Clemson QB Parker suggested that last week's win over Wake Forrest was a turning point for his team:

"I think last week we realized that we could be really good and this week we acted on it. I thought we really got some explosive plays and we played well."

Miami's quarterback Jason Harris sounded a different tone in his postgame comments:

"This has to be my toughest loss here. We fought so hard throughout the game as a team and didn't come out with the victory. We let Clemson outwork us, we turned the ball over too much -- little things that made us get to this point."

Clemson will host FCS foe Coastal Carolina next Saturday before resuming ACC play the following week at home against Florida State. They'll travel to North Carolina State on November--. Miami plays two of their next three on the road, starting next weekend at Wake Forest. They'll face the University of Virginia at home the next week before traveling to Chapel Hill for a game against North Carolina on November--. - 42534

Carbon monoxide is a deadly by-product when fuels do not burn completely due to lack of oxygen or enough heat. Exposure to can carbon monoxide can quickly lead to death as it clings to the bloodstream and blocks oxygen from reaching the vital organs of the body. Prolonged exposure will lead to organ failure that can be fatal without immediate medical attention.

All household devices that burn fuel can become a source of this toxic gas. Most homes have inadequate ventilation due to our continuous quest for energy efficiency. Carbon monoxide leaks on such homes can result to accumulation of the deadly gas and the result can be fatal. Automobiles, gas stoves and driers, gas fueled furnace, fireplaces and wood stoves are just some of the household devices that can produce this deadly fume.

Vented appliances are provided with a pipe or a duct to send pollutants outside your home. But when the vent is improperly installed, blocked and leaking, the device can inadvertently release pollutant that may include carbon dioxide inside your home.

That is the reason why you should consider installing a carbon monoxide alarm to detect carbon monoxide indoors.

Installing a gas detector can provide added protection against carbon monoxide leaks. There are various models of this device in the market including those that combine a smoke detector to the gas detecting device. Pick one that has the capability to detect most of the various gas hazards possible. Your gas detector should have a reasonable battery life and must provide a noticeable warning sign when you need to change the power source. - 42534

Habs Rip Struggling Islanders

By Ross Everett

The Montreal Canadiens have gotten off to a slow start this season, and entered Thursday night's game against the New York Islanders having gone thirteen games without a win in regulation dating back to last season. Apparently, all they needed to cure their ails was a team that was struggling more than they are. The Islanders only have one win on the season, and the Habs jumped on them early scoring three goals in the first two periods en route to a 5-1 victory at the Bell Centre.

NHL hockey betting devotees who weren't scared away by the -180 home favorite price tag on Montreal cashed their tickets with the Canadiens' big win. It was the sixth win for the Habs in their last eight meetings with the Islanders. The six goals scored just managed to go OVER the posted total of 5'. The Canadiens went OVER for only the fourth time in nine games, while the Islanders have gone OVER in five of their nine contests.

The struggling Montreal offense finally woke up, helped by a 43-22 shots on goal advantage. When Montreal opened a 2-0 lead in the first period it marked the first time this season that they'd led by more than a goal, a fact that surprised left winger Mike Cammalleri:

"We're making it hard on ourselves. That's something -- I didn't realize that until right now but that makes sense. Every game's been so tight, and it's important to try and win in tight games and find ways to win those games but at the same time you can't do that 82 times a year and then however many games in the playoffs, so it was important to get out to a little bit of a lead and hang on to one tonight."

Montreal goaltender Jaroslav Halek played well in relief of starter Carey Price, but lost his shutout bid when he misplayed a puck just seconds into the final period. Cammalleri described a conversation he had with Halek after the game:

"After the game I went to give him a hug and he said, 'I don't like shutouts. And I said, 'Well, you better like shutouts!' But he played great when we needed him tonight, made some solid saves, and we'll let that one go."

Islanders' coach Scott Gordon admitted that his team's listless play made it easy for the Habs' to dominate:

"We were a pretty easy team to play against. Defensively we were on our heels because of all our turnovers and it wasn't just in one area, it was coming out of our zone, it was situations where we had full control of the puck and we're not making plays. It's probably the worst that I've ever seen it tonight and it's something that we've got to get better at."

Montreal plays their next two games at home, hosting the New York Rangers on Saturday night and welcoming the Islanders back to the Bell Centre for another game next Monday night. The Islanders have a Saturday night home game against the Washington Capitals before their return engagement with Montreal. They'll then return home to play their regional rivals the New York Rangers on Wednesday. - 42534

The Power Of Subconscious Mind Is Simply Incredible!

By Kevin J Lockwood

There is literally nothing in all creation which is as powerful and as influential as the power of the mind. Bear in mind that each and every word you utter originates from your mind, just as your actions do as well. While certain actions are a result of your conscious mind, others are manifested on the subconscious level.

A perfect example of this can be witnessed when we sit down to watch TV. In some cases we don't like what we're watching and so we decide to change channels and watch something else instead. This is an action of the conscious mind. On other occasions, we reach for the remote and we flick through the different channels for no apparent reason. This of course is an action on the subconscious level, but have you ever stopped to think about what made you do it? Because this was an action on the subconscious level you probably never gave it a second thought.

The question you need to be asking yourself is how and why these actions occur. Of course, there may have been a commercial on TV which you particularly don't like, and as a result, your subconscious mind took over and told you to change channels. Yes, it's amazing, but you need to bear in mind that your subconscious mind can have a tremendous impact on the way you act and the way in which you behave. As such, it cannot be stressed enough as to just how important it is to train yourself to be able to control and manipulate the power of your subconscious mind. You can be rest assured that if you do, you will be able to experience a significant improvement in the overall quality of your life.

Providing you can learn how to harness and control the power of your subconscious, you'll be able to live the type of life you long for. Unfortunately, most people are brought up believing that there are many dangers lurking in the subconscious mind. Admittedly, mankind needs to understand the undesirable side of human psychology but if we spend too much time focusing on the negative aspects, we're bound to encounter negative experiences.

Because of this it is crucial that you focus primarily on the positive aspects of your life, and how you can gain control over your subconscious mind in order to make self improvement possible. Even though this may at first seem as though it is a complex process, you'll soon discover that rather than being complex, it's simply a series of simple processes. These simple processes can in turn allow you to harness the power of your subconscious and that in turn will help you to reach your full potential. So, without any further procrastination, let's take a look at how you can go about achieving this.

Let's first look at a method known as affirmations, considering its one of the most common methods and also the simplest. Affirmation simply means that you repeat certain things to yourself continually and consistently in order to achieve a desired result.

If for example you found yourself in a situation where you were required to complete a task for which you believed you were not ready, you would more than likely experience a feeling of fatigue. This is essentially the way your body responds to a stressful scenario, but unfortunately it can leave you feeling drained and without energy. By using affirmations, it is possible for a person to overcome this condition which in turn would allow them to complete the task as it should ideally be completed.

The desired goal can be achieved by means of affirmations. In other words you need to remind yourself continuously and consistently that you stand to gain numerous benefits by completing the task successfully. You could go and stand in front of a mirror and tell yourself that by the time you've finished the plans, it will be the best looking home in the world.

Affirmations can of course help you in more ways than one. In fact, if you've never been successful at giving up a smoking, then affirmations can help you do just that. Affirmations, either spoken or written, allow you to gain access to the power of your subconscious mind.

Over and above using affirmations, there are also a number of other things you can do in order to take control of your subconscious mind. For example, you could attend sessions with a professional hypnotherapist. Alternatively, you could choose to use self hypnosis instead, together with various audio recordings designed specifically for this purpose.

While both of the above mentioned methods are known to be highly effective, there is however another process which is still relatively new, and this involves synchronizing the brain waves of the two hemispheres in the brain. This process, known as binaural beats, employs the use of different sound frequencies played into each ear through a set of headphones. The frequencies used are only slightly different from each other but it is sufficient enough to result in an almost instantaneous meditative state of mind. Of course, it is this state of mind which is ideal in terms of allowing the conscious mind to communicate with the subconscious mind.

In fact, there is much evidence to suggest that this process can be taken even further. For example, Buddhist monks often have so much control over the power of their subconscious minds that they are able to perform actions which many consider to be supernatural. Perhaps you have read or seen some of these powers in action where monks are believed to be able to levitate and even become invisible.

Books and movies have made a huge effort in trying to explain how it's possible that people can essentially manipulate matter by using the power of the subconscious mind. This a phenomenon is nowadays known as the 'Law of Attraction' and it is not only a theory, but rather a fact in that it's a physical law which has been proven to work. In other words, you can get certain things out of life simply by communicating successfully with your subconscious mind.

Admittedly, this may sound a bit far fetched, but thanks to advances in quantum physics, it has been possible to prove that many of the ancient religions have been right all along in saying that the reality we live in is simply a product of the human mind. Even mysteries such as psychic capabilities, has been explained in scientific terms thanks to advances in quantum physics.

The bottom line is; your subconscious mind is far bigger and more powerful than what you can never imagine, and that is why you should never overlook the importance of being able to control it. Over and above being able to change the way you act and behave, you'll also be able to use your subconscious mind in order to discover a life full of riches. - 42534

If You're Plagued By The Question "Can Cellulite Be Eliminated?" It's Not Just You

By Lloyd Rogers

At some point in most women's lives, something inevitably horrible happens to the appearance of certain parts of their skin. Cellulite; this is a word that strikes fear and great deal of disgust into most women. The question "Can Cellulite Be Eliminated?", is being asked by countless numbers of women worldwide.

Centuries ago, the dimpled appearance of a women's skin was often seen as something beautiful. Having a little meat on your bones, was something aesthetically desirable in women. Things have definitely changed since then. Although a person doesn't necessarily have to be overweight in order to display signs of cellulite, having fat on your body will oftentimes increase the chances of it happening.

Before the nineteen twenties the word cellulite was not even a part of peoples vocabulary. It was a word created by someone who wrote an article that was featured in a very popular women's magazine. The word stuck and and these days just about everyone knows what it is, and almost no one wants it on their bodies.

It may be something unpleasant for a lot of people to look at, but it's completely and total natural. It's said that it can be seen in over ninety percent of women today. This is not something new, but the hatred of it is something that is relatively new. It's grown to be something of great concern to not only older women, but also to the impressionable young women who try to model their bodies after the, seemingly perfect, bodies seen in magazines and on television.

This kind of fat is not easily destroyed. It's difficult to burn it away because of where it's located beneath the skin. If you think cellulite only effects people who are overweight, you're wrong. It effects athletes, body builders, dancers and a number of other people who lead very active lifestyles. Men are able to get it, but it's not as likely to be seen in them.

Genetics play a big part in determining whether or not cellulite will effect you, but there are other causes as well. Being inactive and not getting enough exercise is a good way to make your muscles become soft, weak and more susceptible to developing cellulite. Eating a diet full of fat is another way. Smoking and drinking heavily are also ways that contribute to the dimpled look.

You may have fallen victim to the many products available that claim they will miraculously cure you of cellulite. There are some products that can help reduce the look of cellulite and others that are just plain scams. There are however, certain ingredients in some of these products that can help increase circulation under your skin. This can sometimes be helpful in reducing the appearance of cellulite.

There are also procedures you can have done. Liposuction is one that many women choose, but this has drawbacks of it's own. There are also injections that are given to the areas containing cellulite. These injections go to work destroying the cellulite fat, but even this is not always an effective way to rid your body of cellulite. If you're asking the question "Can Cellulite Be Eliminated", you are likely to find that answers vary. It may not be possible to eliminate it completely, but there are ways you can help to reduce the look of it. - 42534

Panthers Get On Track With Win Over Bucs

By Ross Everett

Carolina Panthers' quarterback Jake Delhomme struggled on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and was fortunate that his running backs bailed him out. Delhomme threw for only 65 yards with two interceptions, but D'Angelo Williams (152 yards) and Jonathan Stewart (110 yards) kept the chains moving as the Panthers won their second straight game defeating the Bucs 28-21. Tampa Bay has now lost ten straight dating back to last season and are 0-6 for the first time since'85. The fact that they ended up starting that year 0-9 on their way to a 1-15 record doesn't bode well for the rest of the season.

NFL sports bettors were faced with a choice between two teams with dismal ATS records in this game, and those who had the guts to take a 1-3 team as a -3 road favorite were rewarded with the cover. It was Carolina's first NFL pointspread cover of the season and left them with a 1-4 record against the number. Tampa Bay has covered one of their six games this year. The 49 points scored went OVER the total of 40'.

Delhomme attempted only seven passes in the second half, but the way Williams and Stewart were running there was no reason to put the ball in the air. Williams said that even though Tampa Bay knew what was coming they couldn't stop the Panthers' running game:

"I'm sure everybody in the stadium knew what we were going to do. There were times they had nine in the box and we were still getting 7 or 8 yards."

There's been little impatience locally with Bucs' rookie head coach Raheem Morris, but his weekly habit of explaining the obvious to rationalize yet another loss is starting to wear thin:

"We got overpowered at the end, and really throughout the game."

Carolina safety Dante Wesley was ejected after clobbering Bucs' return man Clifton Smith after a fair catch call. After the game, Wesley gave this defense for his actions:

"I was just trying to make a play. You can check my record. I've never really tried to hurt anybody. I've never tried to take a cheap shot on anybody."

Wesley could face a possible fine or suspension from the NFL but, in all fairness, it did appear to be a momentary mental lapse as he was trying to make a big play and not a deliberate attempt to injure Smith.

Tampa's schedule has the look of them going from 'the frying pan into the fire' as they host the New England Patriots next Sunday-fresh off of their 57 point drubbing of Tennessee. Carolina has an easier draw, hosting the Buffalo Bills next Sunday. The game is currently off the board pending the status of Bills' QB Trent Edwards who suffered a concussion in Sunday's win over the New York Jets. The Panthers will then play on the road the following two Sundays, traveling to Arizona and New Orleans. - 42534

Important Things To Know About An Assisted Living Residence In Texas

By Adriana Noton

An assisted living residence is a facility designed for senior citizens or persons with disabilities who need help with some activities of daily living (ADLs). These people may need assistance with things like managing their medications or taking a shower or bath, but they do not need the 24-hour care and supervision provided by a skilled nursing facility. In Texas, assisted living facilities (ALFs) are licensed as personal care facilities. By Texas law, facilities that provide services to 4 or fewer people do not need to be licensed; facilities that have a census larger than 4 do require a license.

The first assisted living residence opened in the 1980's. This was a time when several social trends converged. First, people were living longer and staying healthier. Second, families were more frequently separated by many miles so that no one was available to meet the care needs of a senior relative. Finally, nursing facilities were still perceived as crowded institutions that did not allow for privacy or dignity. ALFs provided an atmosphere that was more like an apartment complex than a hospital. Most people in ALFs had private rooms or apartments. ALFs also provided opportunities for socialization and outings.

ALFs currently house over 1 million people in the U. S. Many of these people suffer from the early stages of illnesses such as Alzheimer's or Lewy Body Dementia that impair cognition. The rest have purely physical needs. In Texas, there are 830 licensed, and 4000 unlicensed, personal care facilities.

Assisted living facilities offer residents a private apartment or room and three balanced meals per day. In addition, they provide help with common physical needs such as keeping track of medicines, showering or bathing, dressing, and toileting. Depending on the rules in each state, some facilities provide heavier care, such as helping people transfer from their bed to their wheelchair and even feeding residents.

ALFs charge a basic rate for room and board. In addition to that, they also charge for the assistance each person needs to function. The more help someone needs, the more he or she pays to remain in the facility.

For instance, in Austin, Texas, ALFs charge an average of $1500 per month for room and board alone. Once you figure in the services most people need, that cost goes up by about $500 per month. These costs are still less expensive than the costs of nursing homes which, in the Austin regions, charge an average of $3000 to $4000 each month.

Most people who live in an assisted living residence pay for their care from their own resources, although Medicaid is available to help cover the cost of care in about 41% of the states. Texas was one of the first two states to develop a Community-Based Alternatives program which helped pay for the cost of care in an assisted living facility. Around 22,000 Texans in ALFs currently receive assistance from the Texas Medicaid program.

Many people wonder when their loved one needs more care than an ALF can provide. Most states have not set any clear guidelines. Texas is one of the few that does have such guidelines. By Texas law, ALF residents must be able to comprehend instructions given in an emergency and must be able to self-evacuate in the event of a crisis. For instance, someone who is so confused they cannot understand which exit to use would not be appropriate for ALF care in Texas. Texas guidelines also state that ALF care is not appropriate for anyone who needs to be supervised and cared for 24/7, or for anyone requiring invasive procedures like medications delivered through a PICC line or catheter or tube feeding. - 42534
